Autumn Path | Eskilstuna, Sweden

Aerial fine art  ·  Tobias Hägg

From directly above Eskilstuna, a narrow path runs through the autumn forest - the tree crowns glowing gold, orange and pale cream against the near-black shadow of the canopy around them, the path itself a thin dark line through the colour.

The forests around Eskilstuna in Södermanland are mixed deciduous and conifer - the oaks and birches turning gold and orange in autumn while the darker pines and spruce around them stay deep green or near-black. At the point in the season when the canopy thins and the low light catches the turning crowns from above, individual trees read as luminous colour points against the darker mass of the surrounding forest - each one distinct, each one at a different stage of the turn. A narrow path through the forest catches just enough light to be visible from altitude, the thin dark line of bare earth the only human element in the composition.

The dark, rich palette - glowing amber and cream against near-black - gives this image a warmth and depth that the lighter forest images in the collection lack. It works in spaces where something atmospheric and specifically autumnal is the intention, and pairs naturally with Forest Roads II from the same area of Sweden.
