How to frame
your artwork.

The right frame does two things — it protects the print and it completes it. This guide covers everything you need to know to display your Airpixels print at its best.

How to frame your Airpixels artwork

Framing is the final act of the print. It is where the photograph stops being an object and becomes something that belongs to a room. Done well, a frame is invisible — you see only the image. Done badly, it competes. This guide is about getting it right.

01    Style

Match the frame to
the image, not the room.

The first instinct is to match the frame to the furniture. The better instinct is to match the frame to the image. An aerial photograph of a frozen Scandinavian lake calls for something simple and honest — a thin black or natural wood profile that holds the space around the image without trying to add to it.

For Airpixels prints, we recommend:

Thin black metal

The most versatile choice. Works with virtually every image in the collection — especially ocean, abstract and desert prints. Recedes and lets the photograph do the work.

Natural light oak or ash

Brings warmth. Works particularly well with Nordic forest, autumn and Scandinavian prints where the natural tones complement the wood.

White or off-white

Creates a gallery-style presentation. Especially effective for abstract and high-contrast images. The white merges with the print's existing 50mm border for a clean, expansive look.

02    The border

Your print already has
a mat built in.

Every Airpixels print includes a 50mm white border on all four sides. This is not just for framing convenience — it is a deliberate part of the composition. The white space gives the image room to breathe and means you never need to add a separate mat.

The simplest approach: measure your print, buy a standard frame in that exact size, and drop the print straight in. No cutting, no trimming, no mat needed.

Remember: the sizes on our store refer to the total print size including the border. A 70×100 cm print has an image area of approximately 60×90 cm. Buy a 70×100 cm frame and it will fit perfectly.

03    Colour

Let the image
lead the palette.

The colours in the print should guide the frame choice, not the other way around. A print with deep ocean blues and a dark frame creates a contained, dramatic feel. The same print in a white frame reads as lighter and more open.

Neither is wrong. It depends on what role you want the print to play in the room. If you want it to anchor the space, go darker. If you want it to open up the wall, go lighter. The image itself is strong enough to hold either choice.

04    Size & placement

One large print beats
three small ones.

The most common framing mistake is choosing a size that is too small for the wall. A print that looked substantial on screen can disappear above a large sofa. Our recommendation for a standard living room wall above a sofa: 70×100 cm as a minimum, 80×120 cm if the wall is wide.

For placement, hang the centre of the print at eye level — approximately 145–150 cm from the floor. Above furniture, aim for 15–25 cm of space between the top of the piece and the bottom of the frame.

If you are unsure what size will work in your specific space, contact us with the dimensions of your wall and we will advise.

05    Matting

When to add a mat —
and when not to.

Because every Airpixels print already has a 50mm white border, a separate mat is rarely needed. Adding one would create a very wide white surround that tends to dominate the image rather than serve it.

If you specifically want a matted look — for example to place a smaller print in a larger frame — use a neutral white or off-white mat. Avoid coloured mats: they fight the aerial colour palette and rarely work well.

06    Quality

A quality print deserves
a quality frame.

Every Airpixels print is produced on archival paper designed to last generations. The frame you choose should match that commitment. Look for UV-protective glass or acrylic — it prevents fading from daylight over time. Avoid hanging prints in direct sunlight regardless of glass quality.

IKEA RIBBA and LOMVIKEN, Desenio frames and most custom framing shops stock sizes that match our standard print dimensions. For limited edition prints, a custom frame from a specialist framer is worth the investment — it matches the quality of the work inside it.

“We went for the 70×100 cm in a simple black frame above the sofa, and it reads like a window. The paper is thick and beautifully matte. Every guest comments on it.”
