Laponian Meander | Änok, Swedish Lapland
From altitude above Änok in Swedish Lapland, the Rapaätno river makes a perfect S-curve through autumn birch forest - the water deep turquoise against a canopy of gold and amber, warm light flooding in from the horizon and catching every treetop at once.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
Änok sits in the heart of Sarek National Park in Swedish Lapland - one of Europe's last true wildernesses, accessible only on foot or from the air. The Rapaätno river winds through the valley in broad meanders carved over thousands of years into the flat glacial deposits of the valley floor, the current cutting into the outer bends and depositing sand on the inner ones as it has done since the ice retreated. In late September the birch forest that lines the banks turns in a matter of days - the whole valley shifting to gold and amber almost overnight. Caught from altitude at the peak of this transition, with low evening light flooding the canopy from the northwest, the colour combination is absolute - warm gold forest, cold turquoise water, the S-curve of the river holding the composition together from top to bottom.
This is one of the most immediately loved images in the collection - the colour range is warm and rich without being heavy, the composition is strong and readable at any size, and the subject has an emotional quality that pure abstracts lack. It works in any interior and is particularly powerful at 70×100 and 80×120 where the full depth of the autumn canopy and the clarity of the river become visible simultaneously.
