Ocean Arena | Henningsvær, Lofoten
From altitude above Henningsvær, the football pitch sits on its rocky island in the Lofoten archipelago - the bright green turf and white pitch markings surrounded on all sides by raw Arctic rock and dark teal water, the most improbable playing surface in Norway.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
Henningsvær is a fishing village in the Lofoten Islands built across several small rocky islands connected by narrow bridges. The football pitch - Henningsvær Idrettslag's home ground - was built on one of these islands in the only flat space available, the rock blasted and levelled to create a regulation-size playing surface with the Arctic Ocean on three sides and a cod-drying rack on the fourth. From altitude the pitch reads as a graphic rectangle of bright green dropped onto a surface of raw stone - the contrast between the precise geometry of the sports turf and the completely organic form of the island around it is total and immediately readable.
The image works on the same level as the Barcelona basketball court and the Sagrada Família - a subject photographed millions of times from the ground that the aerial perspective transforms into something entirely different. The warm orange rock, deep teal water and vivid green pitch give it a colour range that works in any interior, and the subject matter resonates with anyone who knows the Lofoten or follows football.
