Pines of Winter | Åre, Sweden

Aerial fine art  ·  Tobias Hägg

From directly above Åre, the snow-loaded pines radiate outward from a central clearing - golden winter light catching the upper branches, deep blue shadow filling the gaps between, the whole forest reading as a single radial composition.

Åre in Jämtland is Sweden's most well known mountain resort - a landscape of spruce and pine forest that carries heavy snow loads through the long winter, the branches bending under the weight until the spring thaw releases them. Shot directly above a clearing in the forest, the trees around it lean into the frame from every direction, their snow-covered crowns catching the low winter sun in gold and pale white while the shadowed gaps between them cool to deep blue. The clearing at the centre creates a natural vanishing point that gives the image an unusual centrifugal energy - the eye drawn outward to the edges along every branch.

The blue and gold palette and the radial geometry make this one of the most distinctive winter images in the collection - neither a landscape nor a pure abstract, but something between the two. It works in any interior that needs a winter image with visual energy rather than stillness, and particularly rewards the 70×100 format where the individual snow formations on each branch become legible.
