Swakopmund sits at one of the most extreme geographical boundaries on earth - the point where the Namib Desert, one of the oldest and driest deserts on the planet, meets the cold upwelling waters of the South Atlantic. The beach that runs north and south of the town is a hard-packed sand track where 4WDs drive between the dune scrub and the surf line, the desert and the ocean separated by no more than fifty metres of beach. From altitude the vehicle reads as a white dot between two vast parallel textures - the wind-patterned sand and spinifex of the Namib on one side, the foaming Atlantic swell on the other - its tyre tracks the only straight line in the frame.
The warm sandy palette and the sense of open space give this image an unusual sense of freedom and scale. It works in any interior that responds to coastal and desert landscapes, and particularly rewards larger formats where both the desert texture and the individual wave forms in the surf become legible alongside the tiny vehicle between them.
