Colours of the Arctic | Skagsanden, Lofoten

Aerial fine art  ·  Tobias Hägg

From directly above Skagsanden, the Arctic water is turquoise - the same colour as the Maldives but with the temperature of the Norwegian Sea - meeting white sand through a thin broken line of foam that shifts with every wave.

Skagsanden is one of the most photographed beaches on the Lofoten Islands - a long white sand shore that looks, from altitude, completely at odds with its Arctic location. The turquoise colour of the water here is a product of the clarity of the Norwegian Sea and the white quartz sand beneath the shallows - the same optical effect that produces the colour in tropical waters, but in a location where the temperature rarely exceeds ten degrees and the mountains rise directly from the beach. From directly above, the composition reduces to two elements: turquoise water and white sand, divided by the irregular white line of the breaking wave. No sky, no mountains, no people - just colour and the boundary between two surfaces.

The two-tone palette - clear turquoise and pure white - gives this image an unusual calm and versatility. It works in any interior and is one of the most widely appealing images in the collection for that reason. It pairs naturally with Caribbean of the North, the companion image from the same island group that shows the mountains and the full coastal context.
