Guardians of Black Sand | Reynisfjara, Iceland
From altitude above Reynisfjara, the Atlantic surf hits the black volcanic sand in a continuous white mass - the boundary between foam and obsidian beach a ragged organic line, and on the dark shore, two figures standing at the edge of it all.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
Reynisfjara on Iceland's south coast is one of the most dramatic beaches on earth - a stretch of black basalt sand formed from volcanic material ground fine by millennia of Atlantic surf, backed by columnar basalt cliffs and subject to some of the most powerful sneaker waves in Europe. From altitude the drama is purely visual - the white of the surf and the near-black of the volcanic sand are at opposite ends of the tonal range, and the boundary between them shifts with every wave in a line that is never the same twice. The two figures on the dark sand, almost invisible against the black ground, are the only human presence in something vast and indifferent.
The near-monochrome palette - white foam, dark grey water, absolute black sand - gives this image a graphic intensity that works in spaces where strong contrast is the intention. It pairs naturally with Black Sand, the companion image from the same beach shot in different conditions and from a different angle.
