The Devil's Grip II | Edition of 5 | Sossusvlei, Namibia
From low altitude above Sossusvlei, the dune formation known as The Devil's Grip is reduced to two tones - the lit face a pale, wind-textured white, the shadow side absolute black, the ridge between them a line as precise as anything drawn by hand.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
Sossusvlei in the Namib-Naukluft National Park contains some of the tallest sand dunes on earth - formations that have accumulated over five million years in the oldest desert on the planet. The Devil's Grip is a dune system where the prevailing southwesterly wind has shaped the sand into a series of interlocking ridges and bowls, the forms changing with every storm season but always returning to the same underlying geometry. Shot in monochrome at low altitude, the colour that usually defines this landscape is removed entirely - what remains is pure form, light and shadow, the sculpted surface of the sand reading as something between geology and architecture.
Where The Devil's Grip I captures the formation in warm sunrise colour, this edition works through absence - no ochre, no orange, only the contrast between the lit face and the deep shadow that makes the three-dimensional form of the dune fully legible. At 80×120 cm the scale of the edition matches the scale of the landscape. Five prints exist.
