Aerial fine art  ·  Tobias Hägg

From directly above Iceland's volcanic highlands, a glacial river splinters into dozens of braided channels across dark basalt - silver water on black rock, the branching pattern reading exactly like the thing the image is named for.

Iceland's braided glacial rivers form where meltwater from the ice caps spreads across flat volcanic plains with no single defined channel to follow. The water divides and rejoins constantly, depositing sediment in the shallows and carving new paths through the dark basalt gravel - the pattern shifting with every flood and every thaw. From altitude the individual channels read as fine silver lines on a near-black ground, the branching structure of the whole system only visible from above, where the scale is large enough to take it in.

The high contrast between the pale glacial water and the dark volcanic substrate gives this image an unusual graphic quality - it works as pure abstract pattern from across a room, and rewards close inspection for the detail of the individual channels and the sediment patterns within them.
