Dunes of Namibia | Namib Desert, Namibia
From altitude above the Namib, the dune ridge runs diagonally through the frame - warm salmon-pink sand on one side, dark storm cloud filling the other, the boundary between them the most dramatic line in the oldest desert on earth.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
The Namib Desert has been continuously arid for at least 55 million years - the oldest desert on earth, its dunes shaped by winds from both the Atlantic coast and the interior plateau. Rain is rare enough that when storms form over the Namib they move through the landscape as visible events, the cloud base dropping below the altitude of the tallest dune crests and wrapping around the sand formations as they pass. This image was shot from altitude as a storm moved in - the dune face still catching direct light in warm salmon-pink while the cloud filled the lower right of the frame in near-black, the sand and weather occupying the same altitude at the boundary between them.
The warm-cool contrast between the salmon sand and the dark teal-grey cloud gives this image a palette that is unusual in desert photography - dramatic without being harsh, the colours working together rather than simply opposing each other. It works as a strong statement piece and pairs naturally with Mountains of Sand, the companion shot from the same conditions taken from a different angle.
