Sagrada Família | Barcelona, Spain

Aerial fine art  ·  Tobias Hägg

From altitude above Barcelona, the Sagrada Família reveals what ground level never shows - the full geometry of Gaudí's spire cluster rising from the rigid grid of the Eixample, one organic form against a century of straight lines.

The Sagrada Família has been under continuous construction since 1882 - the longest-running architectural project in the world. Gaudí designed the basilica around a forest of branching stone columns and a skyline of eighteen spires, each representing a biblical figure, their heights precisely calculated to culminate in the central tower of Jesus Christ at 172 metres. From the street, visitors see one facade. From altitude, the full plan is legible for the first time - the cruciform floor plan, the relationship between the completed spires and the cranes still finishing the rest, and the way the Eixample's perfectly regular city blocks frame the building on all sides like graph paper around a hand drawing.

This is one of the most architecturally specific images in the collection - a subject photographed millions of times, seen here from the only angle that shows it whole.
