The Cormorant | Li River, China
On the Li River in Guangxi, China, Huang Mingde practises an ancient craft - training cormorants to dive and return. From altitude, man, bird and water become a single quiet composition against the silver surface of the river.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
Cormorant fishing on the Li River is one of the oldest forms of fishing still practised in China — a tradition stretching back over a thousand years. From the air, the fisherman and his birds reduce to a small dark shape on a wide, silver-grey river. The surrounding karst mountains, the bamboo raft, the light catching the water's surface — none of it is arranged. This is how it looked from above.
The Cormorant is an image about patience. About a way of life that persists quietly at the edge of a modern world. It brings stillness into any room it enters.
