Island in the Sky | Tre Cime, Dolomites
From altitude above the Dolomites, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo rise through the cloud layer - the jagged summits clear above the grey-blue mist, the valleys below completely hidden, the rock faces catching the early light while everything beneath them remains in cloud.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
The Tre Cime di Lavaredo are three vertical dolomite towers in the Sexten Dolomites of northeastern Italy - among the most recognisable rock formations in the Alps, rising to just under 3,000 metres above a high plateau that is itself already above the treeline. Shot from altitude at the level of the cloud inversion, the towers emerge from the grey-blue mist as isolated forms with no connection to the ground visible below them - the valleys, the paths, the refuges all buried in cloud, the summits existing entirely in the clear air above. A second rock face in the foreground gives the image depth and scale, the two elements framing each other across the cloud-filled gap between them.
The cool blue-grey palette of the cloud and the warm stone of the lit rock faces give this image an unusual tonal range for a mountain photograph - atmospheric and specific, it works in any interior where something with vertical scale and geological drama is the intention. It is one of the few Dolomites images in the collection and brings a distinctly alpine character to the subject matter.
