September Pines | Kvikkjokk, Sweden

Aerial fine art  ·  Tobias Hägg

From altitude above Kvikkjokk, the first cold mornings of September have brought fog into the Laponian forest - the pine canopy emerging in sections through the mist, the treeline dissolving at its edges into grey.

Kvikkjokk sits at the end of the road in Swedish Lapland, at the point where the boreal forest gives way to the open fells of the Laponian Area - a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of rivers, wetlands and ancient Sámi reindeer routes. In early September the temperature drops fast and the mornings bring a low fog that settles in the valleys and between the trees. From altitude this creates something unusual - the forest is both visible and obscured, the individual pines reading as dark shapes through a pale diffused light, the fog erasing the ground entirely.

The muted palette of deep green, grey and pale white gives this image a quiet, melancholic quality that suits spaces where you want something Nordic and atmospheric. It works particularly well in the 70×100 format where the texture of the fog and the individual tree forms both become legible.
