A Humpback's Journey | Ilulissat, Greenland
From directly above Ilulissat, a humpback whale moves through glacial water between the icebergs - the full length of the animal visible from altitude, its shadow falling through water the colour of crushed glass.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
Ilulissat on Greenland's west coast sits at the mouth of the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier - the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere, calving billions of tonnes of ice into Disko Bay each year. The icebergs that accumulate here are among the largest on earth, and the waters between them are rich with krill and fish that draw humpback whales in from the open Atlantic. From altitude the scale relationship between whale and iceberg becomes visible for the first time - the animal enormous by any human measure, reduced to a dark shape against pale glacial water by the sheer scale of what surrounds it.
The top-down perspective is one that almost no wildlife photograph achieves - the whale fully legible as a form, its markings and the distinctive white of its pectoral fins visible through the water. It works as a singular image in any space where the subject matter can carry the wall on its own.
