A Volcanic Walk | Edition of 5 | Kerlingarfjöll, Iceland

Aerial fine art  ·  Tobias Hägg

From altitude above Kerlingarfjöll, a single figure moves through an active geothermal landscape - rhyolite ridges in sulphur yellow and rust red, steam rising from the ground, the human presence almost invisible against the scale of Iceland's volcanic interior.

Kerlingarfjöll is a volcanic mountain range in the central Icelandic highlands, one of the most geothermally active landscapes in Europe. The rhyolite rock here has been stained by centuries of sulphuric acid and hydrothermal activity into an extraordinary range of colour - acid yellow, burnt orange, deep rust and pale green, all of it bare and exposed at altitude where no vegetation can establish. The figure in this image is almost lost in the scale of it - a single moving point in a landscape that has been actively hostile to human presence since Iceland's volcanoes last erupted.

All five prints of this edition have found homes. The image remains in the archive as a record of one of the collection's most singular moments - a landscape that looks more like another planet than anywhere on earth, with the quiet proof of a human being in it.
