Laguna Rosa | Torrevieja, Spain
From altitude above Torrevieja, the salt lagoon burns deep red against the pale Spanish coastline - its colour not a trick of light but a biological fact, the water stained by halophilic bacteria that thrive only where salinity reaches its extreme.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
Torrevieja's lagoon on Spain's Costa Blanca is one of the most saline bodies of water in Europe - a commercial salt extraction site where the concentration of brine has created conditions that almost nothing can survive except Dunaliella salina, a microalgae that produces a deep red carotenoid pigment as protection against the intense salinity. The result is water that ranges from pale rose to near-crimson depending on the season and the depth, with white salt crystallisation forming at the edges as the surface evaporates. From altitude the textures of the salt crust and the colour gradients of the water are both fully visible - a landscape that is at once industrial and completely extraordinary.
The deep red and mineral white palette makes this one of the most distinctive images in the collection - strong enough to anchor a room on its own, and particularly effective in spaces with neutral or grey walls where the colour has nothing to compete with.
