The specific blue-green colour of Iceland's glacial rivers comes from rock flour - particles of basalt ground to powder by the movement of glacial ice over the bedrock, then carried in suspension by the meltwater. The concentration of this fine sediment determines the exact shade, which shifts between pale mint, deep teal and near-black depending on water depth and volume. From altitude, where the full braided pattern of the river system is visible simultaneously, the colour dominates the entire frame - the dark basalt islands between the channels providing the contrast that makes the water's colour fully legible.
