Salt | Edition of 19 | Torrevieja, Spain
From altitude above Torrevieja, three salt ponds meet at a single point - turquoise blue on one side, deep rose-purple on the other, pale grey above, the narrow earthen levees between them forming a perfect Y against colour fields that have no equivalent in the natural world.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
The Salinas de Torrevieja on Spain's Costa Blanca is one of Europe's largest commercial salt extraction operations - a system of shallow hypersaline ponds where the water colour shifts according to salinity concentration and the microorganisms that survive at each level. Turquoise indicates lower salinity, the water closer to the sea it came from. The deep rose and purple of the adjacent pond indicates extreme concentration - Dunaliella salina algae at maximum density, producing the red carotenoid pigment that gives the most saline zones their extraordinary colour. The levees separating them are bare earth and salt crust, the white crystallisation visible at the water's edge where evaporation is most intense.
The Y-junction composition gives this image an architectural precision that most aerial colour abstracts lack - three distinct colour fields meeting at a single point, the geometry as considered as anything a designer would produce. It works as a strong centrepiece in spaces with neutral walls where each of the three colour zones has room to register independently.
