Tidal Order | Edition of 29 | Xiapu, China

Aerial fine art  ·  Tobias Hägg

From altitude above Xiapu at dusk, hundreds of bamboo seaweed farming poles extend to the horizon across still blue tidal water - the perspective compressing them into a single receding pattern, the surface between them perfectly calm, the whole frame one continuous blue.

Xiapu County on China's Fujian coast supports one of the largest seaweed farming operations in Asia - thousands of bamboo poles driven into the tidal flat at regular intervals, strings of cultivated kelp suspended between them in long parallel rows that are planted, harvested and replanted with the seasons. At dusk, when the light flattens and the colour drains from the water, the farming infrastructure reads entirely differently - the poles and their reflections merging into dark vertical marks on a pale blue surface, the perspective lines of the rows converging at a vanishing point that disappears into the horizon mist.

The image has the quality of a work by Agnes Martin or Donald Judd - the repetition is the subject, the slight irregularities within the pattern the only reminder that this was made by human hands rather than a machine. It works in spaces where something with meditative calm and strong graphic structure is needed, and is one of the most distinctively minimalist images in the collection.
