Mountains of Sand | Namib Desert, Namibia
From altitude above the Namib, a dune ridge breaks through the cloud layer - the warm ochre of the sand lit from above while dark storm cloud fills every direction around it, the desert visible below through gaps in the weather like a landscape seen through torn fabric.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."

The Namib Desert is the oldest desert on earth - a coastal strip of sand and gravel that has been arid for at least 55 million years, its dunes shaped by winds that blow in from both the Atlantic and the interior plateau. Rain is rare and brief, and when storms do form over the Namib they move fast - the cloud base dropping below the altitude of the tallest dune crests before the rain reaches the ground. This image was shot in that window, above the cloud layer, with the dune ridge catching direct sunlight while the storm closed in from every side. The sand glows warm against the near-black cloud mass as if lit from within.
The contrast between the warm sand and the dark, turbulent cloud gives this image an intensity that no clear-sky desert photograph achieves. It works as a powerful statement piece in spaces that can hold something dramatic - one of the most visually extreme images in the collection, and one of the most difficult conditions to photograph in.
