Ancient Earth | Edition of 29 | Hanksville, Utah
From altitude above Hanksville, Utah, Jurassic-era desert terrain dissolves into pure texture - iron-red rock channels, eroded ridgelines and dry watercourses laid flat by the aerial perspective into something closer to a geological map than a landscape.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
The terrain around Hanksville sits on the edge of the San Rafael Swell - an uplifted dome of Jurassic sedimentary rock that erosion has been carving for 150 million years. The result is a surface of extraordinary complexity: mudstone and sandstone in every register of red and orange, cut by drainage channels that follow the path of water that no longer flows. From altitude the human scale disappears entirely and what remains is the record of geological time written directly on the land surface - every crack and ridge a chapter in a history that predates anything living.
The warm, dense palette and the all-over texture of this image give it an unusual depth on the wall - it reads differently at distance and up close, the abstract surface resolving into specific geological detail the longer you look at it.
