Blue Hour | Goblin Valley, Utah

Aerial fine art  ·  Tobias Hägg

From directly above Goblin Valley at blue hour, the iron-red sandstone formations that burn orange in daylight shift into something cooler and stranger - deep blue shadows, purple rock faces, the residual warm red of the stone visible only where the last light still reaches.

Goblin Valley State Park in central Utah sits in the San Rafael Swell - an uplifted dome of Jurassic mudstone and sandstone that has been eroding into hoodoos and channels for millions of years. The same formations are visible in Desert Veins, shot in daylight, but the blue hour changes everything. In the twenty minutes after sunset, before the sky goes fully dark, the diffused blue light from the atmosphere floods into the shadow areas of the landscape and the remaining warmth from the western sky catches the highest surfaces - producing a palette that has nothing to do with the desert's usual colour range and everything to do with physics and timing.

The blue, purple and deep rose palette makes this one of the most versatile images in the collection for interior use - it works in spaces that need colour without warmth, and pairs well with other cool-toned images or stands alone as a strong statement piece.
