Braided Rivers of Iceland | Iceland
From a Cessna above Iceland's volcanic highlands, glacial meltwater spreads in broad sweeping channels across the outwash plain - the pale blue-grey silt flowing around islands of rust-red and brown volcanic rock in wide curves that read as pure watercolour wash from altitude.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
Iceland's glacial outwash plains - sandur - form where meltwater from the ice caps spreads across flat volcanic terrain with no defined channel to contain it. The water carries fine rock flour ground from the bedrock by glacial movement, giving it the characteristic pale blue-grey colour visible from altitude. Where rivers like those in Medusa and Erebor branch into fine tracery, the braided rivers of the highland sandur spread in broad, sweeping volumes - the channels wide enough to read as masses of colour rather than lines, the volcanic rock islands between them emerging as warm rust and brown shapes through the pale flood. Shot from a Cessna at low altitude, the full scale and movement of the water system is visible simultaneously.
The cool blue-grey and warm rust palette gives this image an unusual softness for an aerial landscape - the flowing channels and the organic forms of the rock islands together producing something that reads more like a painting than a photograph. It works in any space where something with both visual complexity and tonal calm is needed, and pairs naturally with the other Iceland river images in the collection.
