Deadvlei II | Edition of 9 | 80x120cm
At Deadvlei in the first light of morning, the dune face catches the sunrise in warm ochre and the dead camel thorn trees cast long shadows across the white clay - the same landscape as the open edition, seen in entirely different light.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
Deadvlei is a white clay pan inside the Sossusvlei dune field where camel thorn trees died approximately 900 years ago when the dunes shifted and cut off their water supply. The extreme aridity of the Namib preserves them in place indefinitely - their forms unchanged for centuries, the cracked clay beneath them equally still. At sunrise the light arrives from the east and hits the dune face obliquely, revealing the wind-carved texture of the sand in full detail and turning the orange to a warm, almost luminous ochre. The trees, dark against the pale clay floor, cast shadows that give the otherwise flat pan a sense of depth and time of day that the midday image entirely lacks.
Where the open edition version of this subject is graphic and high-contrast, this image is warm and painterly - closer in feeling to a landscape painting than a photograph. At 80×120 cm the scale matches the ambition of the subject and the detail of the dune texture becomes extraordinary. Twenty-nine prints exist of this light.
