Eye of Sauron | Litli Hrútur, Iceland
From directly above Litli Hrútur during the 2023 eruption, the active crater opens beneath the lens - a circle of molten rock, deep orange at the centre, cooling to black at the rim, the earth's interior exposed and visible from altitude.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
Litli Hrútur erupted on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula in July 2023 - part of a series of eruptions along the Reykjanes ridge that ended eight centuries of volcanic inactivity in the area. Flying directly above an active crater requires precise timing and nerve - the thermal columns rising from the lava can destabilise a drone or aircraft within seconds, and the window for a straight-down shot is narrow. The result is one of the rarest perspectives in the collection: the full geometry of the crater visible from above, the lava lake at its floor still fully liquid, the concentric rings of cooling basalt around it recording the exact moment of capture.
The image is intense and immediate - deep orange, black and the faint glow of active rock. It works as a singular statement piece in spaces that can hold something with real visual power, and pairs naturally with Molten Core, the companion shot from the same eruption taken at ground level.
