Rivers of Iceland II | Iceland

Aerial fine art  ·  Tobias Hägg

From a Cessna above Iceland's volcanic highlands, glacial meltwater threads across rust-red rhyolite and vivid moss green in pale branching channels - the colour range of the rock and the water together producing something closer to an oil painting than an aerial photograph.

Iceland's volcanic highlands are coloured by the minerals in the rock - rhyolite stained rust-red and burnt orange by iron oxide, obsidian black from basalt flows, vivid green where moss has established on the cooler surfaces between the active geothermal zones. When glacial meltwater spreads across this terrain it follows the path of least resistance, branching and merging across the coloured rock in pale silt-white channels that cut through every colour on the surface below. Shot from a Cessna at low altitude, the full range of the highland palette is visible simultaneously - warm rust, deep orange, vivid green and the cool pale white of the glacial water threading between them.

The rich, warm colour palette distinguishes this image from the other Iceland river images in the collection - where Medusa and Erebor work in cool blue-grey tones, this one is warm and complex, closer in feeling to the palette of a landscape painting. It works at any size but rewards the larger formats where the detail of the rock textures and the branching channel structure become fully legible.
