Western Australia's Wheatbelt is one of the most salt-affected landscapes on earth. Thousands of years of natural salt accumulation, accelerated by land clearing, have produced vast shallow lakes that dry and flood seasonally - each cycle depositing new mineral layers and shifting the colour of the surface. From altitude the lakes read as pure abstraction: flat planes of colour separated by thin lines of exposed earth, no sense of scale, no horizon reference.
The palette here sits in the warm register - rose, cream, pale terracotta - which gives this image an unusual warmth for an aerial landscape. It works as a centrepiece in spaces that need something with visual presence but without the coldness of blue-dominant abstracts.
