The Oryx | Namib Desert, Namibia

Aerial fine art  ·  Tobias Hägg

From directly above the Namib, a lone oryx crosses a deep red dune face - the white and black of its markings in complete contrast against the rust-red sand, the wind-lines of the dune surface radiating in every direction beneath it.

The gemsbok - known as oryx in Namibia - is the animal most associated with the Namib Desert, one of the few large mammals that has evolved to survive in conditions of extreme heat and almost no water. Its white body reflects solar radiation, the black facial markings protect its eyes from glare, and its physiology allows its body temperature to rise far beyond the range that would kill most mammals. From altitude on a Namib dune, the oryx reads as a graphic object against the dune surface - white and black on deep red, the two long straight horns giving it an unmistakable silhouette visible from hundreds of metres above.

The image works as both wildlife photography and pure graphic composition - the animal isolated against an all-over red ground with no horizon, no context, nothing but the texture of the wind-scored dune face beneath it. It is one of the most visually immediate images in the collection and works particularly well in spaces where a strong focal point is needed without visual complexity.
