The Stack | Faroe Islands
Between two cliff faces in the Faroe Islands, a basalt sea stack rises from the churning Atlantic - the fog closing in behind it, the surf breaking white at its base, the rock face so close and so dark it fills half the frame.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
The Faroe Islands sit at the intersection of the North Atlantic and the Norwegian Sea, where the ocean has been cutting into basalt cliffs for millions of years. Sea stacks - isolated columns of rock left standing when the cliff face around them eroded away - are common along the Faroese coastline, but few are accessible from land close enough to photograph at this scale. This one rises from a narrow channel between two cliff walls, the surf compressed and driven white by the confined space, the fog reducing the background to a uniform pale grey that throws the dark rock into sharp relief. The shot was taken in storm conditions, the only conditions in which this kind of light and atmosphere exist.
One of the most powerful ground-level images in the collection - dark, atmospheric, immediate. The cool palette of near-black basalt, white surf and grey fog works in spaces that can hold something with real visual weight and emotional intensity. It suits rooms where the art is meant to be felt rather than merely seen.
