Xiapu | Xiapu, China

Aerial fine art  ·  Tobias Hägg

From directly above Xiapu, the rooftops of a densely packed neighbourhood resolve into a mosaic of dark grey tile and bright turquoise corrugated metal - the colour scattered unpredictably across the grid, the narrow lanes between buildings the only gaps in a surface built right to every edge.

Xiapu County on China's Fujian coast is best known for its extraordinary tidal landscapes, but the town itself - seen from altitude - is equally compelling. The rooftop layer of a dense Chinese neighbourhood reads as pure pattern from above: traditional grey tile on the older buildings, bright turquoise corrugated metal on the newer additions and extensions, the two materials mixed without any apparent plan across a grid of lanes so narrow they barely register from this height. The turquoise appears scattered across the frame like colour applied at random - but each one marks a decision made at ground level, a repair or an addition that from altitude becomes part of an accidental composition.

The image works as urban abstraction - graphic, colourful and densely detailed, it rewards close inspection for the variety within the rooftop layer and the glimpses of lane life visible in the gaps between buildings. It suits spaces where something with visual energy and warmth is needed.
