Sarek - Rapa Valley II | Sarek, Swedish Lapland
From altitude above Sarek in Swedish Lapland, the Rapa River spreads across its delta at the height of autumn - the birch canopy burning gold and orange around pale glacial water channels and white sand deposits, the colours at the exact peak before the first frost takes them.

"The quality of the images was greater than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud to call myself a collector of his work."
Matthew D. ·
Sarek National Park in Swedish Lapland is one of Europe's last true wildernesses - no roads, no bridges, no facilities, accessible only on foot or from the air. The Rapa River runs through the heart of it, carrying glacial meltwater from the remaining ice fields down through a broad valley of birch forest and Arctic willow before spreading into a braided delta of channels, sand bars and shallow lakes. In late September the birch canopy turns in a matter of days - the whole valley shifting from green to gold and orange almost overnight before the leaves drop and the frost arrives. From altitude this transition produces one of the most extraordinary colour combinations in Scandinavian landscape photography - warm autumn gold against the cool pale blue of glacial water, the white sand deposits between them catching the low light.
This image works in any interior that needs warmth and visual richness without the heaviness of a dark palette. It is particularly strong in larger formats where the detail of the individual birch crowns, the river channels and the sand patterns all become legible simultaneously.
